First Baptist Church of Wasilla

The Vision of

First Baptist Church Wasilla

Adopted February 20th, 2011

Our Slogan

Loving God, Serving Others, Making Disciples.

Our Purpose

First Baptist Church of Wasilla is a fellowship of believers whose purpose is to know God through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, to serve others unselfishly, and to intentionally develop fully devoted followers of Christ around the world.

Our Mission

We will advance the Kingdom of God by embracing the following five pillars of the Church:

1) Worship – the daily experience of responding to God and expressing a continuing, vibrant, and fulfilling relationship to Him. This should happen both individually and corporately. (Hebrews 10:24-25, Acts 2:46-47, Isaiah 6:1-8)

2) Fellowship – real relationships with real people for the purpose of living a real life of faith in Jesus Christ. (Acts 2:42, Philippians 2:1-2, Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, Proverbs 27:17)

3) Ministry – discovering, understanding, developing, and using the gifts God has placed inside each of us. (1 Corinthians 12, 1 Timothy 4:14, 2 Timothy 1:6)

4) Evangelism – our individual and church-wide efforts to spread the best news we have ever heard: “…God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” - Romans 5:8 (John 3:16, Acts 1:8, 1 Corinthians 9:19-22)

5) Discipleship – making progress toward greater spiritual depth and Christ-likeness no matter where each person is on his/her journey. (Matthew 28:18-20, Romans 8:29)

Our Core Values

In our journey together, we will treasure these core values:

1) BIBLICAL AUTHORITY Since God’s written, inerrant (without error) Word is our standard for faith and practice, all decisions, actions, attitudes, values, and activities will be measured by that Word. (Isaiah 40:8, Psalm 19:7-11, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Hebrews 4:12-13)

2) KINGDOM PERSPECTIVE God’s supremacy over all things means that His eternal purposes will prevail. We will maintain the priority of a God centered worldview and labor to advance the borders of His Kingdom. This means we will use our resources to encourage the whole Body of Christ and impact the institutions, communities, and nations throughout the world (including ours) where Christ is not yet known. (Matthew 6:10, 13:44-46; Psalm 99:1-5; Revelation 11:15; Matthew 28:18-20)

3) SERVANT MINISTRY Since every believer has a unique role to play in God’s Kingdom, we will be intentional about helping all born again Christians discover, develop, and deploy their God-given gifts in Kingdom service. This includes a firm commitment to develop future leaders in the Church. (Matthew 20:26-28, 1 Corinthians 12:4-28, Ephesians 4:11-16, 1 Peter 4:10-11)

4) MINISTRY-BASED EVANGELISM All people matter to God, and as we meet the real-life needs of unbelievers in various life circumstances, we will have opportunity to share the answer to their greatest need—a relationship with Jesus Christ. (Matthew 25:31-46, Luke 10:29-37, Colossians 4:5-6)

5) COMMUNITY IMPACT God has placed us here to accomplish His eternal purposes and to clearly communicate Christ’s Gospel. Therefore, we will immerse ourselves in our community’s joys and sorrows, and partner with others to address needs and opportunities. We intend to be a unifying agent for the diverse ethnic, economic, and social elements of our community so that all may have the opportunity to come to Christ. (Matthew 5:13-16, 9:9-12; Acts 10:34-48; Ephesians 2:11-18; Romans 12:18)

6) CULTURAL ENGAGEMENT Effective ministry must lovingly engage all people by presenting the gospel in ways they understand. Like good missionaries, we will adapt our methods to reach people while firmly maintaining doctrinal purity. At the same time, we will courageously and compassionately act to oppose, when necessary, cultural values and issues that do not honor God. (Acts 13:3, 17:16-34; 1 Corinthians 9:19-27; Hebrews 13:8; 1 Chronicles 12:32)

7) AUTHENTICITY We want our church to be real, honest, and genuine in our life together, so we will stifle hypocrisy by taking Christ, His cross, and His grace more seriously than our outward religious activities and self-defined spirituality. We believe that a claim to a whole-hearted devotion to Christ will show up in practical ways in our individual lives. Therefore, we will grow in humility, press past mediocrity into God-honoring excellence, battle legalism, pursue holiness, and strive towards our fullest potential as children of the Father. (Matthew 23:1-12; Luke 9:46-48; Romans 12:3; 1 Corinthians 10:31, 15:10; 2 Corinthians 4:7-11; Galatians 5:1, 13-26; Philippians 3:12; James 1:22)

8) INTEGRITY Since we treasure Christ and His reputation, we want our beliefs, words, and actions to be seamlessly consistent as we pursue moral, financial, and relational integrity. One testimony of that integrity will be the wise and faithful use of God’s resources given to our church (funds, buildings, etc.) for Kingdom purposes. (1 Chronicles 29:17; 2 Chronicles 16:9; Psalm 15, 25:2; Proverbs 2:7; 2 Corinthians 8:1-7)

9) GRACE-FILLED RELATIONSHIPS The entire Christian experience is about relationships: even though we do not deserve it, God graciously pursues a personal relationship with us and designs relationships as a primary channel for life and ministry. We will build and nurture authentic, deep, generous, courteous, respectful, encouraging, and forgiving relationships of grace with those in our family of faith, as well as with those who have not yet trusted Christ. (Ephesians 2:3-7, 4:29-32; Colossians 3:12-15, 4:5-6; 1 Thessalonians 5:14-15)

10) TEAM WORK Working together and cooperating with one another is essential to the success of a winning team. Every member of the church has an important position to play on the team, and every player’s input is valued. Since there is wisdom in multiple counselors, the leadership of the team (church) will be shared with many, and all parts will work together for the common good of the Kingdom. (Proverbs 11:14, 15:22, 27:17; Ecclesiastes 4:9-12; 1 Thessalonians 3:2; 1 Corinthians 3:9)
